Excerpt from Frederick News-Post:
The city of Frederick put out a call recently for people to fill vacancies on various boards and commissions. The available positions are on the Historic Preservation Commission, the Electrical Board, the Plumbing Board and a Neighborhood Advisory Council.
According to the Historic Preservation Commission website, the term of one member, Michael Simons, is set to end on April 20. All of the other commissioners’ terms, including Chairman Scott Winnette and Vice Chairman Stephen Parnes, are slated to end at different periods in 2018 and 2019.
According to the city news release, anyone who wants to apply for the open HPC position must first “possess a demonstrated special interest in historic preservation.” The applicant can obtain this through formal training in historic preservation, professional or volunteer experience with a preservation-related organization, or active membership in a preservation-related organization.
City officials will give preference to city residents with professional or academic training or specific knowledge in one or more preservation-related fields. Those fields include history, architecture, architectural history, planning, archaeology, anthropology, curation, conservation, landscape architecture, historic preservation, urban design or related disciplines. Any non-city resident must possess that type of training.
Interested applicants must send a letter of interest and a recent résumé to Commission Coordinator Amber Grimes at 101 N. Court St., Frederick, MD 21701 or email it to agrimes@cityoffrederick.com. The city is accepting applications until 4 p.m. March 31.
The HPC is charged with:
- prescribing appropriate rules and regulations for the transaction of its business
- applying preservation guidelines and applicable city code provisions that are consistent with those generally recognized by the Maryland Historical Trust during the consideration of construction, alteration, reconstruction, moving or demolition of designated landmarks, sites, structures, and districts
- using existing criteria to make recommendations of sites, structures, and districts within the city regarding their designation.
