The MAHDC Board of Directors is sad to announce the passing of George B. (Bernie) Callan, Jr., MAHDC Co-Founder, Frederick MD, August 6, 1931 ~ February 13, 2020 (age 88).

MAHDC will be honoring Bernie, its founding chair and board member for over forty years at the upcoming Annual Symposium on Saturday, May 9, 2020, at St. Mary’s College of Maryland, St. Mary’s City, MD. Information about the program will be available on the website Events Calendar. The theme of the 2020 Annual Symposium is Under and Over: Archaeology and Cultural Landscapes.
More about Bernie
Bernie was the Treasurer and Vice President of Finance (Frederick County) for MAHDC and as a founding member, he also served on the MAHDC board since its establishment in 1979. He was the chair of the Frederick County Historic Preservation Commission, former chair of the Frederick City Historic Commission and founding chair of the National Alliance of Preservation Commissions. He was the past president of the Maryland Heritage Alliance and past director on the Board of Trustees of the Maryland Historical Trust.
Bernie also served on the boards of the National Trust for Historic Preservation, National Center of Preservation Law, and the National Conference of State Historic Preservation Officers. He was a nationally-recognized authority on the economic benefits of historic preservation and historic districts.
