Licensed Contractor, Maryland Home Improvement Contractor

Thirty-plus years of historical restoration experience, principally on the Upper Eastern Shore of Maryland.  Based in Chestertown from 1977 – 2010, we have performed numerous restorations as a general contractor in Kent, Queen Annes, Talbot and Cecil Counties.  The projects have ranged from complete-gut restorations (Wide Hall – Chestertown), to structural underpinning, moving houses, reproduction millwork, epoxy column repairs (Kent County Courthouse) antique window restoration, and the coordination of modern mechanical systems into historical buildings. Too many projects to list here.  I have served as a general contractor, restoration consultant and carpenter on various smaller projects in the Baltimore area.  I offer complete restoration services, including construction management of large and small projects.

Professional historic remodeling contractor specializing in window restoration, woodwork, epoxy repairs, and other aspects of historic restoration. A sampling of sites that I have worked on in the past are:

Historic Old Wallville Schoolhouse – Prince Frederick, MD
Historic St. Barnabas Church – Bowie, MD
Private historic residences in Scientists Cliffs – Port Republic, MD; Huntingtown, MD; Halethorpe, MD; City of Annapolis to name a few

I perform the majority of the historic restoration work myself and I also have access to highly qualified professionals for other areas of work as projects dictate. I trained with historic preservationist, John Leeke of Portland, Maine to learn window restoration techniques.

My family and I reside in Owings, MD in a circa 1842 Gothic Revival which we are restoring. I look forward to helping you preserve your historic home as well.

In 1972 I entered into a formal apprenticeship, and worked under Floyd Ulmer, a fourth generation Pennsylvania Carpenter born in 1899. Among his peers, Floyd was considered a Carpenter’s Carpenter. Working under him, I enjoyed many projects, including Paca House, Victualing Warehouse, the Barracks, The Market Place, The Tom Thumb Railroad, London Towne Publik House and more.
Having become a journeyman, I set out in 1978 and did the restoration on Slicer Shiplap House, Gassaway-Feldmeyer House, Retilick Brewer House, Jonas Greene House and others. Old houses being a constant source of repairs and maintenance, I’ve enjoyed working on Chase LLoyd House, Hammond Harwood House, John Hopkins House among others. As my interests turned to structures and structural failure, providence led me to many periods of work at Blair House in Washington. there my interests turned again to finish work, where we had the privilege of building the handicap access in the East Wing of the White House.
I am quite blessed in the work that has been given me and currently enjoy the privilege of working on many very unique architectural features at the U.S. Naval Academy.
If there is any one piece of advice I could pass on to those seeking a career, I would encourage them to find what they can be passionate about, and strive to be the best they can be. Everything else will fall in place.

If you have found my listing you either need a mason now for a comparison estimate or you may be looking to buy or sell a structure that you need someone to look at and help you decide what it needs and how much it will cost to fix. Like many clients; you may not want any particular work done, you just need to grasp what is going on with the cracks or deterioration your looking at and you want to make an educated decision based on your own common sense and someone from the field. I have come up with a way that is fair to you and me. If you need something repaired and you live within my work area I will come free of charge and produce an estimate for you. An estimate that spells out what needs to be done with diagrams if needed. I will educate you as to why the damage occurred in the first place, how it needs to be fixed so it lasts and what the cost will be. You get two other estimates to compare prices based on what needs to be done, with what materials and how they are installed. If you need a consult only; someone to walk around a structure, point out problem areas, give you ideas of cost and headaches associated with problems I can come to the site for a fee of $3 per mile. That would be the distance up and back from my residence to your structure. An example would be if the commute was 20 miles away then the price would be 40 x 3 = $120. This enables people to have someone out, go through the structure and get another opinion before decisions are made. Please call and I will gladly forward resume, pictures of work, references. I am not a certified home inspector. I am not a structural engineer. I have been doing masonry for thirty years. I want to be able to use you for a reference.
