CEM Design
Registered Architect

CEM Design has built a reputation for excellence in providing award-winning design and management solutions to hundreds of commercial and residential clients.  Our primary areas of focus are historic restoration and renovation, and environmentally sustainable “green” design.  While these may seem to be very different areas of expertise, we believe they are essentially complimentary.  The most sustainable building conserves and reuses the embodied energy of an existing building.

CEM Design is committed to the principles providing comprehensive, personalized service; designing aesthetically appropriate, innovative projects that utilize state of the art materials and methods; and insuring that projects are completed on time and within budget.  We have received several awards for our thoughtful, innovative designs, and numerous accolades for the thoroughness and accuracy of the documents we produce.

We are licensed architects in the District of Columbia, Maryland, Virginia, Colorado, and Massachusetts, and we hold national certification (NCARB).  We are LEED Certified by the US Green Buildings Council, Energy Star Partners, members of Green America and the Maryland Green Registry.

Charles Paul Goebel, Architect, Ltd.
Registered Architect

Prior to founding his award-winning firm in 1998, Charles held leadership positions with distinguished architectural and planning firms designing a wide range of residential and commercial projects. This experience combined with his passion for designing fine homes led him to open his own residentially-focused architecture and planning firm on Maryland’s beautiful Eastern Shore. The exceptional natural beauty and vernacular traditions of the Shore captivate and inspire him.

Projects range from elegant waterfront estates and casual weekend retreats to historically-sensitive renovations and additions. Charles has developed an expertise designing for sensitive coastal areas and in navigating the complex matrix of planning, zoning and environmental regulations. Although residential commissions have been a constant throughout his career, he selectively takes on non-residential commissions where the client’s commitment to quality is paramount.

Charles works very closely with his clients, their builders and craftspeople to create enduring architecture – to be cherished for generations.
